Left Circulatory Network and Centrifugal Blood Pump.

The left ventricular assist device (LVAD) that produces a countinuous blood flow is a Centrifugal Blood Pump (CBP).  The CBP takes blod from the left ventricle and eject it into the aorta. The open loop network consists of: atrial reservoir (preload), left ventricle and systemic arterial tree. The behavior of the native ventricle is implemented as reported in "Numerical Hart Model (1)" section. LAP is the left atrial pressure, LVP is the left ventricular pressure, AoP is the aortic pressure. MV is the mitral valve and AV is the aortic valve. Cas (Ras) is the systemic arterial compliance (systemic variable peripheral resistance). Rcs (Ls) is the characteristic systemic resistance (inertance). Qli is the (Qlo) input (output) ventricular flow. MV and AV are modelled using resistances and diodes. AV (MV) regurgitation can be modelled with two resistances Rlo and Rinv (Rli and Rinv) without diode.

Left Circulatory Network with CBP and Systemic Arterial Tree Implemented Using Three RLC Elements.

The Centrifugal Blood Pump (CBP) produces a continuous flow. The CBP takes blod from the left ventricle and eject it into the aorta. The open loop network consists of: atrial reservoir (preload), left ventricle and systemic arterial tree composed of aortic, thoracic and abdominal tracts. RAT, CAT and LAT are the resistance, compliance and inertance describing the behavior of the aortic tract. RTT (RABT), CAT (CABT) and LAT (LABT) are the resistance, compliance and inertance describing the behavior of the thoracic (abdominal) tract. LAP is the left atrial pressure, LVP is the left ventricular pressure. MV is the mitral valve and AV is the aortic valve. MV and AV are modelled using resistances and diodes. Ras is the systemic arterial peripheral (variable) resistance. Qli (Qlo) is the input (output) ventricular flow. The behavior of the native ventricle is implemented as reported in "Numerical Hart Model (1)" section.

Numerical Model of the Centrifugal Blood Pump implemented as LVAD in CARDIOSIM© software.

The equations reported in the slide modelling the behaviour of the rotary blood pump implemented as LVAD (left ventricular assist device) in CARDIOSIM© software simulator. k1, k2 and k3 are constants that assume different values for different rotational speed of the pump. The LVAD tackes blood from the left ventricle (i.e. LVP is left ventricular pressure) and ejects it into aorta (i.e. AoP is the aortic pressure). Qpump is the pump flow.
